How do I use AI-generated video, layers and 3D in After Effects?
Download the asset from OTOY Studio in a format After Effects reads natively. Video comes as H.264 MP4. Layered images come as a layered PSD: Seedream Layerize, the layer editor and the image compositor all export one, and After Effects opens it as a composition with each layer separate. 3D models come as GLB, which After Effects imports natively since version 24.1. Gaussian splats come as PLY and need a third-party plugin, such as KIRI Engine's free After Effects plugin. For keying a subject, use Beeble SwitchX, which outputs a separate matte video you apply as a track matte. Checked against OTOY Studio and Adobe's documentation, October 2026.
Formats, by asset
| From OTOY Studio | Download as | Into After Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Video | MP4 (H.264), up to 4K from models that support it (Kling 3.0 and O3, Seedance 2.0, LTX) | Native import |
| Subject cut-out from video | Beeble SwitchX: the video plus a separate alpha matte video (720p or 1080p) | Put the matte above the footage and set the footage's Track Matte to it |
| Layered image | Layered PSD, or a ZIP of transparent layer PNGs | Import the PSD as a Composition to keep layers |
| Transparent image | PNG from GPT Image's Transparent background, 3D Snapshot, Layerize layers or the image compositor | Native import |
| 3D model | GLB from every 3D model. FBX from Meshy, Rodin and TripoSR remesh | GLB, GLTF and OBJ import natively since After Effects 24.1. FBX support is listed as beta |
| Gaussian splat | PLY | Third-party: KIRI Engine plugin (free, MIT, After Effects 2025+) or Irrealix Gaussian Splatting (paid) |
| Depth for a splat scene | Per-view depth maps ZIP from 2D Gaussian Splat | As a grayscale layer for 3D Channel effects or a blur map |
Steps: layered artwork into a comp
- In OTOY Studio, run Seedream 5 Pro Layerize on a finished image. It splits it into up to 16 transparent layers.
- In the layer editor, export a layered PSD.
- In After Effects, choose File > Import, pick the PSD and import it as a Composition. Each layer is ready to animate.
Steps: a relit or composited subject
- Run your footage through Beeble SwitchX in OTOY Studio with an Alpha mode such as Auto.
- Download both the video and the alpha video.
- In After Effects, stack the alpha video above the footage and set the footage's Track Matte to Luma Matte.
What to watch for
- Transparent video exports from OTOY Studio's video compositor as WebM (VP8), because MP4 can't carry alpha. After Effects doesn't reliably read WebM alpha. Convert it to ProRes 4444 first (for example with ffmpeg), or use the SwitchX matte route above.
- No ProRes, PNG sequence or EXR export from the app. The exception is Luma Ray 3.2's HDR EXR, which needs HDR account access.
- The video compositor exports up to 2560 px on the long side, 8-bit. For 4K, download the clip straight from a 4K-capable model.
